GOP chair Launches Campaign to Oust Iowa Supreme Court Justice

September 11, 2012

The state Republican Party chair called for voters to remove one of four supreme court justices standing for retention in November. Justice David Wiggins participated in the 2009 unanimous ruling that legalized same-sex marriage in the state, and three of his colleagues lost their bids for retention in 2010. Iowans for Freedom, the group that led the 2010 ouster effort, kicked off its campaign against Wiggins’ retention on August 11, and the National Organization for Marriage pledged to match up to $100,000 in contributions to the effort. A group formed in 2010 known as Justice Not Politics mobilized to support Wiggins, but to date, Wiggins has opted not to mount a political campaign on his own behalf.
