Grandparents Can Be a Trusted Resource for Children of Divorcing Parents

For children of divorcing parents, grandparents can provide the safety and security that is so vitally needed by them during this time of transition. Often, grandparents are caught in the middle of the high emotion and stress that accompanies divorce; wanting to help their grandchildren during this difficult time is not easy and oftentimes confusing. Grandparents can provide a trusting environment in which their grandchildren can safely share their thoughts and fears about the divorce. But, a cautionary note: grandparents who wish to be available to talk with their grandchildren about the divorce and transition should make certain they are discussing their concerns and willingness to serve as a support with their adult son/daughter and son/daughter in-law. As authors Charles and Ann Morse once said, “[a] child needs a grandparent, anybody's grandparent, to grow a little more securely into an unfamiliar world.”
