While IAALS conducts a
nationwide search for our next executive director, I’m honored to serve in the
role on an interim basis. Throughout the past year, Scott Bales has led IAALS
through unprecedented challenges and helped us launch new initiatives to lead
the legal system forward. His leadership has been a gift.
I’ve now had the opportunity to sit
down virtually with each of my IAALS teammates. As individuals, they are wonderfully talented people. A small but mighty team, they are single-minded
in their commitment to the IAALS mission: to forge innovative and practical solutions to problems within the
American legal system.
As America reckons with institutional
racism and grapples with COVID-19’s threat to lives and livelihoods, our mission will
make a positive difference. I’ve seen
the many impacts of IAALS over the years from my role on the Board of Advisors.
IAALS’ steadfast commitment to improving our civil justice system and forging
its future won’t change. In this time, IAALS’ work is crucial—and that
work is backed by our teammates, a broad network of partners, and soon a new
leader to help guide it all. We look forward to this next chapter of IAALS.

Justice We Can Believe In Requires Racial Justice: The legacy of racism that blights our criminal justice system also creates inequities in our society more broadly. IAALS joins others in this process of listening, reflecting, and recommitting ourselves to the goals of equity and inclusion, because they are central to our vision of a justice system that works for all people. |

Do Not Delay: Courts Should Continue Reform Work During COVID-19: In June, it was announced that reforms to Canada’s Divorce Act will be delayed due to the pandemic, highlighting just how important it is that courts prepare for this and other types of possible disasters. There are a number of practical steps courts must take now in order to meet people’s needs in a world where going to a physical courthouse is even more difficult—and dangerous. |
Ohio's Reform Efforts Continue with Discovery Rule Amendments and Case Management Pilot Projects: For the second year in a row, Ohio is on track to make significant amendments to its Rules of Civil Procedure and to pilot a second civil justice case management reform project. These amendments align with national recommendations for reform and reflect similar reform efforts in Idaho, Maine, Missouri, and Texas. |

On August 20 from 11 a.m.–12 p.m. MT, IAALS and the University of Denver Sturm College of Law will co-host a virtual panel discussion on how regulatory reform—and the innovative and diverse ecosystems such reform can create—can help address issues of racial injustice. This esteemed panel features legal industry leaders and access to justice advocates Rohan Pavuluri (Co-Founder/CEO, Upsolve), Andrea S. Jarmon (Founder, Jarmon Law Group), and Andrew Arruda (Co-Founder/CEO, ROSS Intelligence). Our panelists and the ensuing discussion will focus on concrete efforts to change these regulatory structures and how members of the legal profession can lead around these efforts.
