It’s my honor to serve as IAALS’ interim executive director while we conduct a nationwide search for our next visionary leader. Since stepping into the interim role in July, I have loved seeing firsthand how IAALS’ work makes a real difference at a time when it’s needed most. In order to ensure the leadership over this important work continues—and grows—we recently retained the renowned global search firm Heidrick & Struggles to help us find the best and most diverse possible candidates for the CEO job at IAALS. In a recent blog post, I shared in my own words what makes this role special.
Our legal system needs leaders and visionaries in these trying times. And IAALS seeks the same. We’ll keep you posted on the progress of our CEO search, and in the meantime will continue our work toward justice we can believe in. In that vein, we hope you'll join us for our 13th Annual Rebuilding Justice Award Celebration on October 20 from 2–3 p.m. MDT, during which we'll recognize our two awardees for their leadership and innovation in advancing our justice system.

IAALS is thrilled to announce the creation of the Alli Gerkman Legal Visionary Award, made in honor of the late Alli Gerkman, who was a leader in national legal education and legal profession reform and at IAALS. We honor Alli and her work with this award—and those who follow in her footsteps.
The Alli Gerkman Legal Visionary Award recognizes an innovator who has made significant impacts early in his or her career toward making the American legal system work better for everyone who needs it and everyone who is a part of it. The purpose is to encourage and showcase innovators, risk-takers, visionaries, and emerging leaders who bring a different perspective and a reform-minded approach to the improvement of our legal system.
Nominations for the award are open now through December 1. Click here for more information about the award, the selection process, and to submit a nomination. |

Expert Opinion: The Legal Profession's Leaky Pipeline Is Leaving Black Americans Behind: The legal profession is fraught with systemic barriers to entry, which form ripple effects on the road to becoming a lawyer. IAALS Expert Zack DeMeola outlines how the pathway is much like narrow pipeline—entry is limited and every segment is springing leaks, disproportionately affecting people of color along the way—creating a profession that is among the least diverse in the country.

On September 25, IAALS hosted a virtual donor appreciation reception. Our organization wouldn’t be what it is without the generosity and support of our extraordinary, visionary donors, and we’re grateful to everyone as we work toward justice we can believe in.
A recap of the event can be found here, which includes insights from Rebecca Love Kourlis and Sam Walker into the future of IAALS and our work.
