Phase Two: Developing Learning Outcomes

In the second phase, we are using the survey results to develop a set of learning outcomes, assessments, instructional designs, and hiring tools to instill and identify the desired characteristics, competencies, and skills in future lawyers.

IAALS is working with four schools across the country to translate the Foundations for Practice survey results into actionable learning outcomes and hiring rubrics. IAALS has developed a draft set of learning outcomes that we are refining through twelve workshops with law schools and legal employers. At the conclusion of the project, we will publish a set of learning outcomes that law schools can use as a starting point, a set of hiring rubrics that legal employers can use to make better hires, and a description of the process we used to develop these tools.

Participating law schools:

  • Columbia Law School
  • University of Denver Sturm College of Law
  • Northwestern Pritzker School of Law
  • Seattle University School of Law

In September, IAALS will host a webinar entitled A Teaching Roundtable: Building Foundations for Practice in Law School.
