Western District of Pennsylvania: E-Discovery Special Masters Pilot Program

Recognizing that complex electronic discovery issues are surfacing in an increasing number of cases, in November 2010 the Board of Judges of the Western District of Pennsylvania—through its Alternative Dispute Resolution Implementation Committee—approved the establishment of an E-Discovery Special Masters Pilot Program. In February and March of 2011, the Committee accepted special master applications, followed by a mandatory orientation for selected individuals. The court published a list of approved special masters and beginning on May 1, 2011, these special masters can be appointed at the discretion of the presiding judge. They are authorized to monitor electronic discovery compliance, narrow and facilitate the resolution of electronic discovery disputes, and provide reports and recommendations to the judge, as necessary.
