Gov. Christie Nominates Two for Supreme Court

December 10, 2012

Governor Chris Christie submitted nominees for two New Jersey supreme court vacancies to the senate. One of the nominees is a sitting superior court judge and, if confirmed, would be the first Asian American justice on the court; the other nominee is the director of the board of public utilities. In Christie’s view, the nominees represent a “political compromise” and “giving the Senate what they want on the court”—i.e., partisan balance and diversity. If confirmed, the seven-member supreme court would then consist of three Republicans, two Democrats, and two independents. The senate rejected two Christie nominees for the high court back in June.
