Since last summer, I’ve had the privilege of leading IAALS while chairing a national search for its next leader. David Yellen will step into the role of CEO on June 1, and I am more excited than ever for IAALS’ future.
As IAALS enters its next chapter under David’s leadership, my colleagues are tasked with not only improving our justice system, but addressing the most pressing issues of our time—the COVID-19 pandemic, overdue recognition of racial injustice, and bolstering the rule of law. Events over the last year have shaken all of us. However, IAALS is uniquely positioned to champion the innovative approaches, open dialogue, and data-driven solutions that we so desperately need.
It’s been an honor to serve as interim executive director these past nine months. We’ve accomplished much together, and IAALS commits to doing the hard work ahead.
Sam Walker, Interim Executive Director May 2021

Back to the Future: Civil Case Management: Civil jury trials have been few since the pandemic began. Cases stalled and slowed, phone conferences and Zoom replaced in-person hearings, and deadlines were extended. How did courts handle the tension between civil rules and procedure on the one hand, and the fundamental right to a jury trial on the other? And, what will stick? |

Unbundled Legal Services in the New Normal Virtual Conference: In April, IAALS, the Chicago Bar Foundation, the ABA Standing Committee on the Delivery of Legal Services, and the Self-Represented Litigation Network (SRLN) hosted a three-day event that focused on the hows and whys of supporting and implementing unbundled legal services both during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Video of the sessions and presentation materials are now available on the conference page. |

Across the country, more and more jurisdictions are reimagining how to deliver and regulate legal services. Many stakeholders in the justice system—including lawyers, other legal service providers, judges, legal educators, law students, and the public—are curious about these innovations and want more information about how they work and how they open new avenues for more people to access legal help.
This year, IAALS, the ABA Center for Innovation, the ABA Center for Professional Responsibility, the ABA Standing Committee on the Delivery of Legal Services, and Legal Hackers are hosting a quarterly speaker series, Redesigning Legal, to provide a forum to learn about and discuss the regulatory changes underway, the challenges they face, and the opportunities they provide. Industry leaders and experts will offer a variety of perspectives and break down common assumptions and misunderstandings, as well as provide information on the nature and scope of the access to justice crisis and barriers to sustainable legal access.
Please save the date for the first session, “Leading from the Bench—Expanding Access through Regulatory Innovation,” on June 9 from 11 a.m.–12 p.m. MDT. The panel, moderated by IAALS’ founding executive director and former Colorado Supreme Court Justice Rebecca Love Kourlis, will feature Justice Ann Timmer of Arizona, Chief Justice Bridget McCormack of Michigan, Chief Justice Nathan Hecht of Texas, and Chief Justice Matthew Durrant of Utah.
More details and registration coming soon.
