Delaware Gov. Markell Praises State's Merit Selection Process

Rather than being elected by the voters, Delaware’s judges are appointed by the governor with senate confirmation. Since 1977, Delaware governors have entered an executive order creating a judicial nominating commission to screen applicants and recommend the best qualified candidates. In the wake of several recent judicial appointments, Governor Markell praised this selection process:

Who we have as judges says a lot about who we are as a people, because justice is at the very core of who we are as Americans. As we’re focusing on putting people back to work in Delaware and improving our schools, having a great justice system is critical to having Delaware move forward.
