Uncomplicated Courts Convening

All day

At IAALS' Uncomplicated Courts Convening, we will redesign how courts approach high-volume cases. The current system is complex and opaque and legal help is often out of reach, leading to confusion and poor outcomes for the significant number of people representing themselves. By integrating process simplification, user-facing technology, and expanded legal help, we can empower people across the country to navigate our legal system with clarity and confidence, with or without a lawyer.

This convening will bring together civil justice reform experts and teams of judges, court administrators, and advocates from four states to drive concrete progress in legal system redesign. It will be a highly collaborative event, with ample time devoted to group discussion and workshops. At the convening, we will:

  • Gain insights about the social psychology of system redesign
  • Ground our discussions in research about pain points in the current system
  • Align around a collective vision for high-volume cases
  • Build and vet new approaches and tools that will achieve that vision

Our ultimate goal is to work together to translate our vision for a redesigned process for high-volume civil cases into a concrete, actionable roadmap for courts. Following the convening, IAALS will continue to support state court teams as they work toward implementation of a redesigned high-volume path, and broaden this work by creating resources and support to scale this redesign.
