To say that Sandra Day O’Connor fundamentally changed the legal landscape for good is really only a beginning, not a summation, of the contributions she made. To my mind, her deepest value came in the simple doing of things and doing them in an authentic and straightforward way that forged a new path forward.

In her final post as Executive Director, Rebecca Love Kourlis discusses the public’s low trust and confidence in the American legal system. IAALS will be rolling out the results of its research in the area over the next few months, and begins with three papers, which together kick off a part of the conversation IAALS calls “Are We at a Boiling Point?”

With heavy hearts we share the news of IAALS Senior Director Alli Gerkman’s passing after a long battle with cancer. There are no words that can adequately convey who Alli was—and who she was to us. Alli was a force of nature. She was a captivating presence and was remarkable in her ability to connect with others. Alli knew how to get things done and how to make things work. She knew what it meant to work hard and to laugh harder. She was a teammate and a friend. And she has left an incredible legacy.

Over the years, Marcus has brought support, enthusiasm, availability (always), respectfulness, and a gentle mien to IAALS. There are too few Marcuses in this world. IAALS was graced by his participation on our Board of Advisors and we are grateful.

Ken has been with IAALS' Board of Advisors since 2015, and as an early supporter of our work in legal education, Ken has served the Board as a thoughtful, candid, and generous member. We thank him for his insight and many contributions over the years.

Gay Cook has been with IAALS' Board of Advisors since 2015, where she has served as a source of objectivity, perspective, intellect, and candor. We thank her for being our conscience over the years, and we are better for her lens and contributions.

It was IAALS’ honor to know and work closely with Justice Daryl Hecht of Iowa, who passed away last week. His was a life well-lived, and we are all lucky to have had him in our midst.

“Justice for all.” It is a promise of American democracy and enshrined in our Pledge of Allegiance. And yet, it is not a reality. IAALS wants to change all of that. We are proud to present you with our 2018 Annual Report, which highlights our work and accomplishments within this important context.

We have been very fortunate to have Mark Nadeau on our Board of Advisors. Mark’s depth of thought, intellect, and candor—and his deep generosity—have been valuable assets at IAALS, and we count him among our blessings.

Alan Carlson has been a pivotal part of IAALS over the last few years, leading us on strategic planning, helping us with projects, and connecting us to new board members. Alan is the epitome of a can-do person, and we are incredibly fortunate to have had him as part of our board. 

This month, IAALS welcomes Lynnea Louison as our new Senior Director of Operations. We are so fortunate to have someone of her experience and caliber join our team, and we are excited for what the future holds. Welcome to the IAALS family, Lynnea!  

Dick Holme has been an invaluable resource at IAALS over the years. With his pioneering insights, steadfast dedication, and hard work, Dick has not only helped shape IAALS, but the legal system as well. We thank him for his continued thought leadership and philanthropic commitment to IAALS.

As a former president of the ACTL and one of our very first board members, Ozzie has been an invaluable resource at IAALS, and his steadfast dedication to the organization has been critical to its success. We thank him for over a decade of hard work at IAALS and his continued support of our mission. 

Camille was recommended to us as a star in legal academia—an innovator and a visionary. She has the capacity to open minds and eyes to a different perspective, while still finding common ground. We are so lucky to have her amongst us.

Karen Mathis is leaving IAALS at the end of this month. Karen has been the Associate Executive Director of IAALS since 2012, and prior to that, she served on IAALS’ Board of Advisors. Under her guidance, IAALS has come of age.

Sam is one of the most genuine, committed people I know. He looks for ways to advance humanity—with humility and grace. Helping hands, opening doors, caring about the world beyond our personal borders is what gives life purpose. He fits right into our mission here at IAALS, and we all benefit greatly from his contributions.

Tom Clarke is a gift. He is brilliant, collaborative, good-natured, and visionary. So many of the good ideas that are bubbling through the court systems in the United States today can be traced back to Tom. As a community of court geeks, court reformers, and court lovers, we owe a great deal to him.

Public trust and confidence in our judiciary, and our judges, is vital. Yet, over the last several decades, that trust has been eroded. For people to trust judges again, we must ensure a series of pillars are in place: improved ways of selecting judges; improved ways of evaluating judges’ performance; and improved systems for disciplining judges who abuse their power—which is the subject of a new IAALS report.

Bill came to IAALS as a representative of the American Association for Justice. I think initially he was a bit skeptical about our work and our mission. Over time, Bill has become a friend and a trusted colleague. He is entrepreneurial, visionary, and practical. We thank Bill for his artful purpose and for his collegiality.

Tony is one of a kind. He sees the big picture and can envision unique solutions to old problems. His enthusiasm and ideas are boundless, and he knits them all together and is able to see causes and effects. And, of course, he is incredibly tech-savvy. He is connected, internationally, to the innovators in law and delivery of legal services. With Tony in our midst, we can expand the reach and possibilities of IAALS’ impact exponentially.
