Upcoming Workshop on the Nuts and Bolts of Civil Justice Reform

December 4, 2017

On January 18-19, 2018, in Phoenix, Arizona, the National Center for State Courts and the Maricopa County Superior Court will host a Civil Justice Initiative Implementation Workshop on the Nuts and Bolts of Civil Justice Reform. This workshop is part of the three-year implementation effort that follows the Conference of Chief Justices (CCJ) and Conference of State Court Administrators (COSCA) endorsement of 13 recommendations designed to transform the civil justice system in our state courts.

Following this endorsement in 2016, IAALS and NCSC launched a Civil Justice Initiative (CJI) Implementation Plan to support state court implementation of the recommendations—by developing tools, providing education and technical assistance, evaluating demonstration projects, and hosting regional summits for state action teams.

As part of this project, NCSC will host this 1½ day workshop at the Maricopa County Superior Court featuring experienced trial judges and administrators who have implemented the recommendations in their own courts and can speak to both the process and the impact on the ground. The workshop will address:

  • Essential rules for civil pathways;
  • Effective management of discovery disputes;
  • Mapping civil business practices;
  • Effective civil case automation;
  • Civil case management teams; and
  • Managing uncontested dockets.

Courts are encouraged to bring teams so they can work together to develop action plans to take back home to their courts. You can access the online registration page here.
