New York Times on Michigan's Judicial Selection Task Force
May 23, 2012
Two recent opinion pieces in the New York Times discussed the reforms recommended by Michigan’s Judicial Selection Task Force, which included better disclosure requirements, open primaries, and campaign oversight committees. Three of the seven seats on the state supreme court are on the ballot this fall. In 2010, more than $11 million was spent by candidates and independent groups on judicial races. Both pieces lamented the fact that, though many members supported doing so, the task force did not call for replacing judicial elections with gubernatorial appointments based on merit.
