Arizona: Large pool of applicants vying for Supreme Court vacancy (Updated)

Of the 14 applicants for a supreme court vacancy, the judicial nominating commission voted to interview nine, including three Democrats. This was the most Democrats to make it to the interview stage and could have provided the largest number of nominees from which to choose of three vacancies that Governor Brewer has filled. (Because of the requirement that no more than 60 percent of judicial nominees be of the same party, and that at least three nominees be submitted, Brewer could have received as many as seven names. A November ballot proposition would require that at least eight nominees be submitted for each vacancy but would remove the partisan balance requirement.) Ultimately, the commission sent three nominees to the governor, including two Republicans and one Democrat.
