Wisconsin: Justice Not Required to Recuse Himself for Connections with Law Firm

July 10, 2012

As a result of a split vote on the issue by the supreme court, Justice Michael Gableman will not be required to recuse himself from cases involving a law firm that provided him with free legal representation in an ethics case in 2010. A state attorney had asked the court to reconsider a challenge to the state’s collective bargaining law, which that law firm had defended, without Gableman’s participation. A former supreme court justice suggested that the judicial commission might investigate the issue further.
