New York: Several vacancies upcoming on state’s high court
July 20, 2012
In addition to the court of appeals vacancy for which the commission on judicial nomination is currently accepting applications, there are several upcoming vacancies on the seven-member court. Two justices will reach the mandatory retirement age of 70, and one justice’s term will end, in 2014. Two more justices reach mandatory retirement in 2015 and 2016. Vacancies on the state’s highest court are filled by the governor, who makes an appointment from among three to seven candidates recommended by the nominating commission. Appointees must be confirmed by the senate.
