IAALS Welcomes Andrew Arruda as Entrepreneur-in-Residence
IAALS, the Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System at the University of Denver, announced today that Andrew Arruda has joined the organization as its first-ever entrepreneur-in-residence.
“We are delighted to welcome Andrew to this new role at IAALS. He has been integral to the organization for years now, both in his formal role on our board of advisors and as a continued source of inspiration, insight, and innovation across the broad spectrum of our work,” said Sam Walker, interim executive director at IAALS. “IAALS’ mission is as strong as ever but as the world changes, we must look toward change and growth too. As a highly accomplished entrepreneur, Andrew brings the expertise and start-up mentality we’ve been seeking.”
Arruda is currently the CEO and cofounder of Automate Medical, a Special Advisor to the Legal Innovation Zone in Toronto, Canada, the former Senior Advisor, Strategy and Operations, at the University of Toronto’s Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society, and the former CEO and cofounder of ROSS Intelligence.
“IAALS’ data-first approach to reforming our civil justice system, and their tireless work toward access to justice for all, is something I’m deeply passionate about,” said Arruda. “As I shift my attention to the health technology sector, it’s important for me to give back to the legal community—where my heart is and always will be—and there are a lot of ways I could have done that. But I believe this role at IAALS will have the biggest, most important impact at a time when the work they do is more important than ever. I couldn’t be more excited to play a small part in the incredible work IAALS has in motion and on the horizon.”
As entrepreneur-in-residence, Arruda is initially focusing on the organization’s legal education and legal profession efforts, including the Unlocking Legal Regulation and Foundations for Practice projects.
“The world of legal regulation reform is moving at a fast and furious pace, and IAALS has been at the forefront of that movement. We are working directly with Utah on their regulatory sandbox, which includes a number of incredible startups,” said Zack DeMeola, director of legal education and the legal profession at IAALS. “Who better than Andrew, who has been with us every step of the way, to formally join the team and to help influence our work in a way that only he can do? We knew that the timing was perfect for maximum impact . . . and so did Andrew.”
Arruda officially began his role as entrepreneur-in-residence on March 1, 2021. He will continue to serve on IAALS’ board of advisors, where he has been a member since July 2019.
