    On October 27, IAALS co-hosted a discussion on how programs and regulations in other countries have allowed for a more accessible way for people to access the justice system, featuring Crispin Passmore (Founder/Principle, Passmore Consulting), Will Morrison (Strategic Policy Counsel, Law Society of Ontario), and Abigail Moy (Director, Legal Empowerment Network)—and moderated by David Lat (Founding Editor, Above the Law).

  • 13th Annual Rebuilding Justice Award Celebration

    Each year, IAALS recognizes individuals and groups who exemplify the spirit of innovation and leadership that we champion as we work toward building a legal system that is accessible, fair, reliable, and accountable. For the first time ever, this event was held virtually, and was also free and open to the public—making it more accessible to a national audience than ever before.

    Celebrating Rebecca Love Kourlis and her legacy, the Pass the Gavel Dinner also extended a warm Colorado welcome to incoming Executive Director Scott Bales as he began the next chapter of IAALS.

  • Civil Justice Initiative Webinar: Creating Effective Civil Case Management Teams

    This webinar explored the practical impacts of the one-year Civil Justice Initiative Pilot Project in the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court of Florida (Miami-Dade) based on Recommendation 7 of the CCJ Civil Justice Improvements Committee: developing “civil case management teams consisting of a responsible judge supported by appropriately trained staff.” Our presenters included Judge Jennifer Bailey, Judge Thomas Rebull, and civil case manager Yanitza Madrigal.

  • Civil Justice Initiative Webinar: Making Motions Practice More Efficient and Effective

    This webinar highlighted expedited processes for discovery and dispositive motions recommended by the Conference of Chief Justices Civil Justice Improvements Committee and the corresponding rules and case management techniques that can make this approach successful. Our presenters included Judge Randall Warner, of the Maricopa County Superior Court in Arizona, and Don Bivens, a partner at Snell and Wilmer and former Chair of the Arizona Civil Justice Reform Committee.
